Airport Upgrades

Project Background

Campbell River Airport (YBL) plays an important role in Campbell River's ability to attract visitors, residents and business investment. The Runway Extension project broadens the airport’s role as a vital part of the City’s economic diversification strategy. The increased runway length will enable additional jet service at the airport, thus expanding its ability to fill corporate air travel needs and offer a larger inventory of aviation support industries and services.

These opportunities go alongside enhancing passenger and freight service for existing and future markets. By providing improved airfield services to a broader range of aircraft the airport will be positioned to:

  • Improve airline passenger service
  • Expand corporate aircraft use
  • Develop new aerospace related businesses, such as repair, maintenance and manufacture
  • Expand post-secondary aerospace educational opportunities through North Island College
  • Develop air-cargo opportunities

Funding for this $8.3 million project is being jointly provided by three levels of government. The federal and provincial governments are providing two-thirds of project funding through the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund and the Building Canada Fund (www.buildingcanada-chantierscanada.gc.ca ). The City of Campbell River is providing one third of funding, which is being provided in part by funding support from the Island Coastal Economic Trust (www.islandcoastaltrust.ca)

Design for the project is underway and construction began in early July, 2010.  All work on the project needs to be completed by March 31, 2011 as part of funding requirements.
